AmeriCorps Student Fellows

AmeriCorps Funds Available for Student Service!

Funding may still be available for students participating in a practicum, internship, work study, or volunteer service experience during the 23-24 academic year!

Student Fellows positions include 300 and 450-hour terms of service, flexible hours, and an AmeriCorps Education Award upon completion of service.

There is no fee for WACC-member campuses to participate. Service must take place in WA or ID.

Program Details

Benefits

  • Students can earn an AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,459.26 for a 300-hour term of service, or $1,824.07 for a 450-hour term of service. 

  • Upon completion, the Education Award can be used to pay eligible student loans or future educational expenses.  

  • Members gain valuable service experience, develop workforce and civic leadership skills, and have access to professional development opportunities throughout their service term. 

  • For WACC member campuses, if programs submit a Request for Proposal and retain five or more Student Fellows through service completion, they will be eligible to receive $500 per member in supplemental funding for the department or program to use at their discretion! Contact amy.brown@wwu.edu for more information.

Criteria & Eligibility

  • Service sites must be a nonprofit, school, or government agency and service must take place in Washington or Idaho.  

  • These are best suited for students who already have a required practicum, work study, or internship in one of our core focus areas:   

    • Academic Engagement - K-12 Student Success or College/University Student Success  

    • Healthy Futures - Food Security & Basic Needs or Medical & Mental Health Access  

    • Environmental Stewardship - At-Risk Ecosystems or Environmental Education   

  • Students’ service must primarily benefit low-income, underrepresented, and/or marginalized individuals (for Academic Engagement and Healthy Futures focus areas) or public or tribal land (for Environmental Stewardship-At-Risk Ecosystems focus areas).  

  • Positions can be paid or unpaid internships, practicums, or work study that are part of a student’s education plan to attain a degree at their college/university. Other volunteer positions may also be eligible. 

  • Candidates must meet eligibility requirements (citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the US, 18 or older, have some college; see RFP for full details) 

Timeframe

  • Most positions will take place during the 23-24 academic year (fall, winter, spring, or summer).

  • Positions must begin by July 31, 2024. Positions can extend up to one year from a member’s start date.  

  • Enrollment, including required background checks, typically takes 3-4 weeks. Students cannot backlog hours before they are fully enrolled.

If you are a student interested in these positions, please submit a Direct Enrollment Application and Site Agreement (completed by your supervisor). Slots are available on a first-come first-served basis.
