Rachel (she/her) comes to the Coalition after serving as the Executive Director for the Center for Leadership & Social Responsibility (CLSR) in the Milgard School of Business at UW Tacoma. In her role as the Executive Director of the CLSR, she was privileged to direct the Milgard Women’s Initiative, focusing on women’s leadership development across the lifespan, in partnership with remarkably talented women in the South Sound community. In addition, she co-chaired the UW Tacoma Strategic Plan Coordinating Committee with Dr. Ivan Harrell (President, Tacoma Community College), setting the groundwork for UW Tacoma’s new priorities and initiatives. For the past two years she has served on the UW’s Tri-Campus Community Engagement Working Group, building tri-campus capacity for community engagement. In her last quarter at UW Tacoma, she taught T SOCW 512: Practice III: Community and Organizational Practice, which allowed her to fulfill her dream of teaching MSW students about policy, practice, community, and grant writing. In previous years, she has served as a field instructor for MSW practicum students.

Her academic background includes an MSW from the UW Seattle School of Social Work, and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Education from Western Washington University. While an undergraduate at WWU, she started the LEAD (Learning, Environment, Action, Discovery) Project, among other service-learning programs. She was also privileged to assist in starting Washington Campus Compact (now the Washington Campus Coalition for the Public Good). Returning to WWU, and to the Coalition, is a very full circle moment in her career.

In all her professional roles, she has focused on building, maintaining and improving partnerships between higher education institutions and their surrounding communities. She seeks to infuse a strengths-based perspective in all of her work and is beyond excited to bring her knowledge and skills to the Coalition.

In her spare time, she loves to hang out with her sons (aged 21 and 17), bake sourdough bread, go on long walks with no destination, attend live music events, and travel.
